Under: Q & A
Q: Several
people have told me that my son needs psychological counseling. How do I
know whether my child really does needs therapy?
A: Listen
to what others are telling you about your son. Teachers, caregivers or
other parents may be able to see something in your son's behavior
compared with other children in the same age group. Children cannot
always tell us in words what they need or even that something is wrong.
They tell us in the way they behave, so we, as parents, teachers, or
other caregivers, need to learn to "listen" to their behaviors. Is his
behavior normal for his age? Is it normal but exaggerated? Some
behaviors that may not be normal are as follows:
+ throwing violent temper tantrums
+ pulling his hair out, poking or scratching himself
+ attempting to harm other children or animals
+ unable to sit and focus like other children the same age
These
are some indicators that your son may need more than a parent could
provide. Therapists help parents and others involved with children how
to understand their child's behaviors. When in doubt, an initial
appointment with a therapist can provide a professional evaluation of
your son and his behavior.
